Our Google Classroom Roster Integration allows teachers to sync their Sown To Grow classroom roster with their Google Classroom roster, and automatically creates Sown To Grow accounts for students. Occasionally users experience problems when using the integration. Here are a few things you can try if you receive an error when trying to sync your roster.
Browser Plug-ins/Extensions
Many browsers allow users to install "plug-ins" or "extensions" to their browser to enhance the browser experience. Unfortunately, some of these plug-ins/extensions can interfere when Sown To Grow tries to communicate with Google to pull the data needed to roster the classroom. For example, ad-blockers are a common plug-in that can interfere with the Google Classroom integration.
In the Chrome browser, if you have plug-ins/extensions installed, your navigation bar make looks something like this, where the plug-ins/extensions icons are on the right:
There are two different ways to determine if plug-ins/extensions are causing problems with the integration: disabling plug-ins/extensions and incognito/private browsing mode.
Disabling Plug-ins/Extensions
To disable a plug-in/extension in Chrome follow these steps:
1. In the Chrome url navigation bar, type in chrome://extensions
2. You should see a list of extensions that you can be turned on/off:
3. Click on the toggle next to the plug-in/extension to temporarily disable it
4. Return the the roster page, reload the page, and click on the roster sync button again
Incognito/private browsing
Most browsers provide a mode for "safe" browsing where plug-ins/extensions are disabled by default (called Incognito or Private Browsing mode). In Chrome, you can create an Incognito session by:
1. Opening the File menu in Chrome:
2. Click the 3rd option down, "New Incognito Window"
3. Navigate to www.sowntogrow.com, and log in
4. Navigate to the roster page and click on the roster sync button again
Google Permissions
In order for the Google Classroom roster integration to function properly, users need to authorize Sown To Grow to have access to their Google Classroom data. When attempting to use the rostering integration, you should be prompted to grant access with a prompt that looks something like this:
If for some reason you did not click "Allow," the integration will not function properly. You can verify you have authorized Sown To Grow to access your Google Classroom data by following the following steps:
1. Go to https://myaccount.google.com/permissions
2. Log in with your Google credentials
3. Verify in the that your permissions page looks like this:
Allowing 3rd-Party Cookies
Sometimes school/district devices come preconfigured with more restrictive security settings that can prevent Sown To Grow from properly communicating with Google to retrieve roster data. A common setting we've seen create problems is the disabling of 3rd-party cookies. To see if this might be a problem for you, you can follow these steps:
1. Open Chrome Preferences, by clicking on the "Chrome" menu in the top left corner of your computer, and click on "Preferences"
2. In the "Privacy and Security" settings section, look for and click on "Cookies and other site data":
3. Click on the radio button next to the "Allow all cookies" option:
4. Close the "Settings" tab, and go back to the Sown To Grow tab with the roster page.
5. Refresh the page and click on the roster sync button again
